2011- 2012 GUILD CHALLENGE

The challenge was to create a fibre item (woven, spun, felted, knitted, etc.) inspired by some object.

Joan Ross knit a basketweave vest inspired by the edge of this small dish.

Stephanie Clarkson created this table runner done in an overshot pattern with 2/8 cotton. It was inspired by the Victorian violet candy dish.
Betty Wilkinson was inspired by this teacup and saucer.

Betty also created this table runner.
Marlene Edwards was inspired by this piece of 1950s pottery and the linear 'cracks' in her table top at home.  She wove 2 runners, 50 inches long x 17 inches wide (after fulling/hemming). She used crackle weave, treadled as Summer and Winter, block weave, her own block profile and drawdown. Warp: 2/8 cotton, colour: natural, weft: 2/22 Cottolin and 8/8 cotton natural and blue/green.
The suncatcher inspired Paula Shasta to create this scarf with a needle-felted rose.
Mayah Sevink wove this in tencel. The warp was done in various blues and the weft in various rusts. The pattern is an 8-shaft twill. Her inspiration was the pottery plate.
This series of dish towels made by Marlene Edwards.   They are done in ripsmatta weave, a Scandinavian 'shadow weave' technique. The warp is cotton thread and each towel is woven with a different color weft.
